Macroeconomics for Traders
Technical trading has its limits: it cannot predict a Federal Reserve announcement or an employment data release that moves the market 3% in 5 minutes. Understanding the macroeconomic forces that move markets is essential to not being overwhelmed by movements that 'cannot be seen on the chart'. In institutional language, macro is the regime that sets the discount rate, the risk premium and the liquidity that price all assets β and the trader who ignores it is trading without the context that every other participant is using.
Interest Rates: The Engine of Markets
When the Fed raises rates, the dollar strengthens and gold falls; when it cuts them, the dollar weakens and gold rises. This correlation works ~70% of the time β but always think in REAL rates for real assets like gold.
