[ USAGE CONTEXT ]

Look for this pattern at the end of a consolidated uptrend, preferably on a key resistance level. Do not trade against the long-term trend.

What is the Dark Cloud Cover pattern?

The Dark Cloud Cover is the opposite pattern to the Piercing Line. It forms when a large bearish candle opens above the previous bullish candle's high (gap up) and closes below 50% of the bullish body. It's not as strong as the Bearish Engulfing but is still a significant bearish reversal signal.

How do you trade Dark Cloud Cover?

Requires: (1) gap up at the open above the bullish candle's high, (2) close below 50% of the bullish body (but not below the bullish open — otherwise it would be an Engulfing). The lower it goes, approaching the bottom of the first candle, the stronger the signal. Confirmation in the third candle.

Why does the Dark Cloud Cover pattern work?

The Dark Cloud Cover is a two-candle bearish reversal pattern, the bearish counterpart of the Piercing Line. It forms when a bullish candle is followed by a bearish candle that opens with a gap above the previous high and closes below 50% of the bullish candle's body — but not below the bullish candle's open (which would make it a Bearish Engulfing).

The pattern's name is evocative: the bearish candle 'covers' the bullish candle with a dark cloud, signaling that the sunny uptrend is about to turn stormy. The key parameter is the penetration depth: the close must be below 50% of the bullish body. A close at 50-60% is a valid but moderate signal; a close at 70-80% is strong; a close below the bullish open is nearly an Engulfing.

The gap up at the open is essential on traditional markets but often absent on 24/7 markets. In Forex and crypto, traders look for a strong visual separation instead. The Dark Cloud Cover is weaker than the Bearish Engulfing and should always be confirmed by the third candle. A strong bearish third candle transforms the setup into a reliable three-candle reversal.
