[ HOW TO READ THE CHART ]
Green Zone: ROC > 0 → Price is above N periods ago: positive momentum
Red Zone: ROC < 0 → Price is below N periods ago: negative momentum
Main Line: ROC cross above 0 → Shift to bullish momentum
Confluence: Combine Rate of Change with RSI for maximum probability
[ WHAT TO WATCH ON THE CHART ]
Observe how Rate of Change behaves relative to key price points. Note moments when the indicator reaches extreme levels and how price reacts. Look for divergence patterns between the indicator and price movement.
[ FORMULA ]
ROC = ((Price(t) - Price(t-N)) / Price(t-N)) × 100
Expressed in percentage: measures the % change relative to N periods ago

What signals does Rate of Change generate?

ROC > 0 → Price is above N periods ago: positive momentum
ROC < 0 → Price is below N periods ago: negative momentum
ROC cross above 0 → Shift to bullish momentum
ROC at historical highs → Extreme momentum: possible exhaustion

What is Rate of Change and how does it work?

Rate of Change is the percentage version of Momentum. Expressing the change in percentage solves Momentum's non-normalization problem, allowing you to compare the 'speed' of assets with very different prices. A 5% ROC means price has risen 5% relative to N periods ago, regardless of the absolute price value.

How do you use Rate of Change in trading?

ROC is used like Momentum but with the advantage of percentage normalization: you can compare the speed of movement of BTC (at $60,000) with that of a $10 stock. Zero line cross = momentum change. Extreme levels = possible overbought/oversold. Divergences = possible reversals.

What are the strengths of Rate of Change?

Normalized in %: comparable across different assets
Simple and direct
Intuitive basis for understanding momentum

What are the limitations of Rate of Change?

Sensitive to the chosen period
Little value as a standalone signal
Alone it doesn't provide reliable overbought/oversold levels
